Relax on holiday in the Dordogne Valley. Enjoy some of Europe’s most beautiful countryside!
The natural beauty and slow pace of life help make this part of France one of the world’s most popular destinations. A holiday in the Dordogne Valley is a holiday where every bend of the road reveals another surprise– medieval castles perched on the top of cliffs, wide sweeping loops in the river, quiet villages with charming market squares, an endless patchwork of cultivated fields, walnut tree orchards, and ancient natural forest. The historic sights, landscape, weather and Rivers combine to offer a wealth of things to see and do.
The slow pace of life – don’t expect lunch to take less than two hours here – is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. With miles of rolling countryside, wide, slow moving rivers, charming villages with cafes and little restaurants and of course the sunshine, it’s easy to drop down a gear and take a breath. Whether travelling as a couple, family or larger group the area has so much to offer that there is something for everyone.
Long appreciated by the French, the area proudly boasts several UNESCO protected sites, is ideal for outdoor activities and truly values the art of sitting and watching the world go by. Visit one of the many medieval and renaissance castles to appreciate the history of the area – the French and English fought for 100 years to claim ownership and the many castles and fortified bastide towns are a testament to their determination. Wander through the honey-coloured stone villages. Explore the quiet countryside – ideal for walkers and cyclists. Enjoy the rivers – the canoeing here is fabulous and safe even for a first-timer – or take a seat on one of the Gabarres and enjoy one of the best views of the scenery. If Golf is your thing the area has several courses in magnificent settings. Or simply take advantage of the peace and quiet and recharge your batteries with a good book and a glass of wine from one of the excellent local vineyards.
